How do the best teachers engage kids in ‍‍‍‍Project Based Learning‍‍‍‍ while still meeting standard?

by Adri, Katie, and Usha for Second & Third Grades

The RSS feed for "Edutopia" twitter feed:
Twitter / edutopia

The reason we have included the twitter feed of Edutopia is because it has a lot of different ideas posted all under the umbrella topic of education. For example they post how you can use handheld technology in the classroom and what apps are beneficial for teaching.

‍‍‍‍What research‍‍‍‍ says about project based learning blogpost and article
You can read either the blogpost or the article for this information, but both refer to the same article on some research that has been done on project based learning. Project based learning is hard to implement and if it is not done correctly, then there really won't be any benefits to the students. However, if the support is there and other teachers are willing to collaborate as well as put the needed time into a well-developed project, student learning can improve.

The challenge of assessing project-based learning

This is a good resource because it asks the important question of how do we assess project based learning, which includes more critical thinking and collaboration, as opposed to simply just recalling facts. Students will need to be assessed based on their application of knowledge. This however, is more open-ended and many are still unsure of what that would look like.

Learning about PBL blogpost
This is a good resource because it is a blog on PBL and has posts from all different teachers on how they have implemented PBL, advice, reflections, etc. If you are thinking about using PBL I would definately go here to see what other teachers have to say about it.

Yout-tube video on PBL and integrating subjects
I love how these teachers integrated their subjects of history, literacy, and technology. With project based learning, students will never be working with just one individual subject, it will be a combination of subjects. Realizing this, these teachers decided to combine their classes. They had to go to the adminstration to do so, but in the end it provided for a more cohesive learning experience for their students. This schedule also gave the students and teachers more time to go deeper into the learning.

Bloggers on Project based learning

Project Based Learning in Action

This is a video of first graders exploring topics of interest to them through the guidance of the teacher. As the children present her with various animals they would like to study in depth in their classroom, she gently guides them to more practical choices. After the worm project, the door opens up to other interests of the students. One of them relates to an illness a fellow student in their class suffers from-multiple sclerosis. As they do the research on the disease, they explore avenues of discovery that would never have been approached in the traditional textbook. It is incredible to see students so young taking on topics far beyond their typical first grade curriculum. How can we accommodate this kind of learning in our classroom schedule?

Power of Project Based learning

This is an article from the scholastic website on the power of Project Based learning. The article explores how the classrooms are different from the real world work and investigates the need for project based learning. While it is exciting to learn through projects, how can we align projects based learning with the standards or the core curriculum?

Blogs

Erin Klein, a teacher and blogger takes her background in teaching and program development to create ideas to infuse technology enhanced activities that directly correlate to our common core national standards so that teachers can automatically begin a new direction. She streamlines her creative teaching ideas into project-based applications that enhance the academic standards. While there are lots of free technological resources available, how much of technology should we be using in our primary grades?

Getting Started!
This blog is a great jumping off point for implementing PBL lessons into your classroom. It talks about what PBL is and different ways to put PBL into different subjects (even math!). This website is a good over view of PBL and will help you know where to go and what to do next. There are a ton of links to outside websites that have great lesson plan ideas that you can use or adapt to your own class' needs.

10 ways to use handheld technology
For all Apple products there is an app called "TED" and it allows you to find an play TED Talks through the media system in the classroom. This would be a great way to peak students' interests.
There is a Prezi app that allows kids to present their projects to the class in an interesting
way. Prezi is a more dynamic online version of PowerPoint.
Video cameras are a great way for kids to show their projects to the class because you are able to take the class out into the world by video tapping them actively participating in their project.
Digital audio recorders could be a great way for kids to journal their processes. This would be
more of a focus on their thought process rather than their writing. They could put all of their
recordings into one place in order to turn it in to the teacher as often as the teacher would like.
The app called Evernote is a digital collection of notebooks. Students can use this app to help them organize themselves and use it for collaborating with other group members.
Google maps/Google Earth is a great way for kids to see the world. It's a way to learn about new
places all over the world. You can digitally fly all around the planet.
Stack the states is a fun geography app that helps kids to learn about the states and where they are in the U.S.
Solar Walk- 3D solar system model. This app lets you navigate through spacce and time. It has great graphics and 3D capabilities.
Math Bingo app. This is a fun way to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I want to play with this app!
Brittanica kids has bunch of apps on different subjects from volcanoes to Knights and castles. There are puzzles, articles to read, pictures and videos and more depending on the topic. I love this because kids can pick something that they really want to learn about and have loads of information at their fingertips.
